Chinese Labor Day Problem

My plan was to sit for 24 hours to read this weekend because of Dewey’s 24 hour Readathon, this will not be the case. I will still read as much as I possibly can during the marked 24 hours, but I will not be able to stay up during the night.

The reason for this is the holidays that come with International Labor Day (May 1), and the way in which Chinese people arrange holidays. Because of this holiday I will have no school from Sunday (April 28) until Wednesday (May 1), but because they are so generous to give us these holidays I will have to attend classes to catch up what I otherwise would miss on Saturday (April 27). This means I can not sleep in late to be able to stay up for the full 24 hours. Also an exam that I thought I would have before the readathon will be held about a week after, which means that during the holiday I will have to be at my best to study for most of the time (and thus not f*ck up my sleep). Also I then have to run some errands on Sunday, which means I will miss even more time from the readathon.

If the readathon had started around lunch here in Beijing, I probably would have been able to read between classes and all the way during the night until at least the morning on Sunday. But as it begins at 8 pm here in China, I will probably read from 8 pm to midnight or a little bit later. And then continue again the next day for about 6-8 hours, some hours in the morning and some in the evening (hoping to be able to join for the ”End of Event Meme”).

I’m really sad about this, because I had looked forward to the readathon and just trying to stay up for the full 24 hours reading. Even if I don’t get to be part of the full readathon experience, I hope to feel that I  at least have been somewhat a part of it for this spring.

Wow! It sounds like you have an incredibly busy, interesting life! Just have fun with whatever time you can participate in the Read-a-Thon. Good luck!
